Cat’s and UTIs
UTI can be caused by a small stone or a plug made of crystals or protein-laden gunk can that gets stuck inside and completely block the flow of urine. In fact, the urethra is so narrow that involuntary muscular contractions called urethral spasms can lead to an obstruction in the absence of any foreign material. If you ever suspect that your cat might be blocked, take him to a veterinary hospital immediately.
Holiday Plants and Pets
Your pet’s Christmas will not be so “holly-jolly” if Holly berries or leaves are consumed. Holly’s toxicity “stems from” (botanical humor) saponins, which are soap-like chemicals known as glycosides. In dogs and cats, consumption of Holly causes gastrointestinal signs and lethargy. If your pet is exhibiting any symptoms, see immediate medical attention from your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic.
“Oh, Christmas Tree”
A live tree can be hazardous to your pets. Dogs and cats like to chew on sticks and greenery, and the fir tree oils can be irritating to the mouth tissue causing such symptoms as drooling and vomiting. Also, if your pet is chewing on the branches, there is a good chance he is also swallowing some of the needles. If enough needles are swallowed they can have deadly consequences.
